Health Insurance, the Media, and Consumers

Do you watch the news everyday? Do you read the newspaper? If you answered yes to either one or both of these questions you are surely aware of the health insurance crisis in the United States. Over the past few months this has been a hot topic of discussion among the national media. The question is: how does this effect consumers? When it comes down to it, the way that the media portrays the health insurance industry has a lot to do with how consumers move forward.

There is no denying that the health insurance industry is in bad shape. More than 47 million Americans are without health insurance, and the cost of care is on the rise as well. To go along with this, many companies are doing away with group health insurance coverage. In the short term, all of this negative attention goes a long way in scaring millions of consumers. Am I going to be the next person to struggle with health insurance coverage? Will this effect how much money I will have to pay for future coverage? These are all questions that consumers ask time after time.

The best way to deal with the health insurance situation and the media is to take what you hear with a grain of salt. This is not to say that the media is making a mountain out of a mole hill, but negative news stories draw ratings. If you are worried about your situation or need health insurance, do something to better yourself instead of listening to the talking heads.
